Snapdragon Literary Club: June Meeting

This month’s meeting will be on June 30th at 7:30PM. We will be reading, ” One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd” by Jim Fergus.

From Booklist

An American western with a most unusual twist, this is an imaginative fictional account of the participation of May Dodd and others in the controversial “Brides for Indians” program, a clandestine U.S. government^-sponsored program intended to instruct “savages” in the ways of civilization and to assimilate the Indians into white culture through the offspring of these unions. May’s personal journals, loaded with humor and intelligent reflection, describe the adventures of some very colorful white brides (including one black one), their marriages to Cheyenne warriors, and the natural abundance of life on the prairie before the final press of the white man’s civilization. Fergus is gifted in his ability to portray the perceptions and emotions of women. He writes with tremendous insight and sensitivity about the individual community and the political and religious issues of the time, many of which are still relevant today. This book is artistically rendered with meticulous attention to small details that bring to life the daily concerns of a group of hardy souls at a pivotal time in U.S. history. July weather in May

We had a very busy Memorial Day weekend with warm, sunny weather. Some of our guests made their way up near by Mt. Ascutney to see the lovely and lush valley views of the hills of Vermont and New Hampshire. Another one of our guests set herself up outside and painted this beautiful picture our Inn which we love. It was quite warm, and one of our little Snapdragons found refreshment dipping his head in the fountain while some of us continued the work on the path on our back hill (pictures to come). We hope you had wonderful long weekend too. 99 days until Labor Day so let’s enjoy Summer 2011!

This time last year we were painting Bathroom 2

Today

This time last year we were very very busy painting the Inn in preparation for the floors to be refinished. There were all day shifts that lasted late into the night. On this very day last year, we posted about Bathroom 1 (which is now 2 after we realized the numbering system we used all through construction made no sense). All we can say is we are thankful that this summer does not entail the grueling work of last summer and are looking towards our exciting first summer season open!

Beautiful Spring!

This is our first Spring/Spring season at the Inn and as Memorial Day swings around the corner, we’ve been getting the Inn spruced up to match the season. Thanks to our resident floral experts, Carol & Chaz, we have some elegant potted arrangements and baskets this season. These help to compliment the lovely existing foliage of our Snapdragon yard.
We are thrilled to welcome so many new guests during these lovely Vermont months. It is looking to be a busy season. Here’s to Spring and Summer!

Snapdragon Sounds

By now, anyone following our blog (and we know you are out there) will be familiar with the fact that our lovely little inn has an acre of wonderful lawn that leads directly to the entrance of Paradise Park nature preserve.

These were the sights and sounds in the backyard this morning. Picture yourself on the oak tree swing, sitting on the porch, or nestled in the shade of our rock benches with this around you…enjoy!
